Conversions API
A server-side integration from Meta that connects WhatsApp lead and purchase events back to ad delivery, enabling optimisation for real business outcomes.
What is the Conversions API for WhatsApp?
The Conversions API (CAPI) for WhatsApp is a server-side integration that sends WhatsApp conversation events back to Meta's ad delivery system. When someone clicks a WhatsApp ad and becomes a lead, CAPI tells Meta's algorithm that the conversion happened. Meta then uses that signal to find more people like that lead and show your ads to them.
Without CAPI, Meta only knows that a conversation started. It cannot tell the difference between someone who said "hi" and disappeared, and someone who booked a consultation and became a paying customer. CAPI closes that gap. For the bigger picture on where this fits, read our article on how WhatsApp is becoming a sales funnel.
How it works
Step 1: A prospect clicks your WhatsApp ad. Meta records the click and assigns a click ID to track the journey.
Step 2: The conversation happens. Your team or chatbot qualifies the lead through WhatsApp. The prospect answers questions, shares requirements, or books an appointment.
Step 3: You mark the lead event. When the prospect hits a qualification threshold (answered key questions, booked a call, requested a quote), your system sends a "lead" event to Meta via CAPI.
Step 4: Meta optimises delivery. The ad delivery algorithm learns what a qualified lead looks like and shifts budget towards people who match that profile. Over time, you get more qualified leads for the same spend.
Requirements
Minimum event volume. Meta requires at least 10 lead events within a 30-day window before optimisation kicks in. Below that threshold, the algorithm does not have enough data to learn from. Most businesses need 2-4 weeks of consistent ad spend to reach this baseline.
Technical setup. CAPI is a server-side integration. You need a developer or integration partner to connect your CRM or lead management system to Meta's API endpoint. Events are sent via HTTPS POST requests with the click ID, event name, and timestamp.
WhatsApp Business API. You must be using the WhatsApp Business API (not the free app) to generate the events that CAPI reports. The Business App does not support server-side event tracking.
Meta Business Manager. Your WhatsApp number, ad account, and CAPI configuration must all be connected through the same Meta Business Manager account.
Benefits of using CAPI
Optimise for leads, not just conversations. Without CAPI, Meta's algorithm optimises for the cheapest conversations. With CAPI, it optimises for conversations that actually become leads. The difference in lead quality is significant.
Lower cost per qualified lead. As the algorithm learns which audiences convert, it spends less on people who are unlikely to qualify. Most businesses see cost-per-lead improvements of 15-30% within 60 days of enabling CAPI.
Better attribution. CAPI gives you a clear picture of which ads, audiences, and creatives generate actual leads, not just chat volume. This makes budget decisions easier and more accurate.
Privacy-resilient tracking. Because CAPI is server-side, it does not rely on browser cookies or pixel tracking. It works regardless of ad blockers, browser privacy settings, or iOS tracking restrictions.
When NOT to use the Conversions API
You generate fewer than 10 leads per month from WhatsApp. Below Meta's minimum event threshold, the optimisation engine will not activate. Focus on increasing your conversation volume first before investing in CAPI setup.
You do not have a clear definition of "lead." CAPI needs a consistent event to optimise towards. If your team has no agreed criteria for what counts as a qualified lead, the signal you send Meta will be noisy and the optimisation will be unreliable.
Your ad budget is under £500 per month. At very low spend levels, the algorithm does not get enough data to learn effectively. You will see better results by focusing that budget on testing audiences and creative manually.
You have no developer resource. CAPI is a technical integration. If you cannot connect your CRM to Meta's API (or hire someone who can), it will not work. There is no self-service setup wizard.
Connect your WhatsApp leads to smarter ad delivery
CAPI turns your WhatsApp conversations into a feedback loop that makes every ad pound work harder. If you want to set it up properly and start optimising for real leads, book a free discovery call and we will plan the integration with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Conversions API for WhatsApp.
Do I need the Conversions API to run WhatsApp ads?
No, but without it you can only optimise for conversations started, not actual leads or sales. The Conversions API unlocks lead optimisation, which Meta says reduces cost per lead by 24% on average.
How many lead events do I need to qualify?
You need to share at least 10 lead events in any 30-day period via the Conversions API. Once eligible, you can select lead optimisation in Ads Manager.
Is the Conversions API difficult to set up?
It requires server-side integration, so you will need some technical capability. Many businesses use automation platforms or work with an agency to handle the integration with their existing systems.
