Making a CMS Intelligent with AI-Powered Content Tools

Extended Umbraco as a headless CMS with AI-driven workflows via Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling AI systems to interpret and act on CMS content with full contextual understanding.

The Challenge

The client wanted to fundamentally rethink how they use Umbraco. Rather than treating the CMS as a static content store, they wanted a platform that modern AI tools could understand, reason about, and build against. They also needed a modern front-end architecture that could bridge Umbraco content with React and Next.js, giving their development team a performant, scalable foundation.

What We Delivered

We extended Umbraco as a headless CMS and introduced AI-driven workflows through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This gave AI systems full contextual access to Umbraco content types, relationships, and documentation. Instead of AI tools guessing at CMS structure, they could now interpret it accurately, generate component definitions, and validate content-driven applications with real precision.

AI was used throughout the development lifecycle to automate documentation analysis, schema interpretation, migration script creation, block mapping logic, and front-end component scaffolding. MCP servers gave AI agents the context they needed to support architectural decisions, diagnose issues, and recommend modifications.

On the front end, we introduced a universal server-side rendering framework that merges Umbraco content with React and Next.js. Block definitions map directly to components, with client-side hydration handled through Vite and Framer Motion. The result is a modern, performant architecture the team can build on with confidence.

This work has since been recognised by Umbraco and will feature as a global case study on the use of AI and MCP within the platform.
